about

"Hyde & Seek" is a 1968 spy thriller that never was. Inspired by the music of John Barry, Henry Mancini, Ennio Morricone, Franco Micalizzi, Bernard Hermann and many more masters of 60's crime/spy/exploitation films, "Hyde & Seek" tells the story (with music and with poorly conceived snippets from the never-made film) of D.C. Roland Hyde's rise to the ranks of 'double oh" special agent and experiencing the corruption and disbanding of MI6.

The idea came from the tune. I thought it was suitably John Barry-esque and I decided to try and make an authentic soundtrack album. I listen to a lot of this genre and usually they are only a handful of songs which are variations on a main melody. I was keen to try this myself and really enjoyed treating a particular theme to a variety of musical styles and instruments. In the absence of a Dulcimer I made use of 2 instruments I'd never played or recorded before: a melodica and a glockenspiel.

Once I had enough versions of the song I decided to write and record some dialogue to pad out the album a little (the final album only runs for 26mins 53sec, standard for the genre). I approached the dialogue in a similar fashion to the music: recorded hoping the limitations of my recording gear and musical ability will give it a "vintage" feel. Sadly it still sounded too much like me (oh how we hate the sound of our own voice) so the whole thing was pitch shifted, transferred to 4-track cassette and compressed and ruined as much as I could to give it the feel I was going for - a poor quality VHS dub of a 60's film.

Think of it on the same lines as the new DangerMouse album "Rome" only I don't have access to a real studio or good musicians... enjoy!
