about

A Christmas classic to enjoy at least once a year, every year!

“IT’S CHRIIIIIIIISSSSSMASSSS” shouts Noddy Holder, front man of Slade, on their annual classic “Merry Christmas Everybody”. What an inspiringly brilliant song. No Christmas is complete without that and Wizzard’s “I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday”.

We regard Christmas songs as disposable garbage that we only tolerate for a couple of weeks a year - and that’s because 99.9% of them totally are. But if you can wade through the Mariah and Bublé and you’ll find some absolute gems.

I recorded “Christmas Morning” back in 2015 after a heavy musical bender on Slade, Jellyfish and everything Roy Wood and Jeff Lynne ever did together and apart. I didn’t set out to write a Christmas song (I don’t plan any of my songs), it just popped into my head like they usually do. But this one was different. It was a Christmas song and that spells trouble ... even with my adorable kids singing Jingle Bells at the end!

What to do with a Christmas orphan? Well the guys at Foghorn had a solution: go and record a couple of Christmas covers and put it out as a single!

So I came up with a version of Slade’s best known song with a peculiar folky twist and I mashed up “The Carol Of The Bells” (or Shchedryk as I pretentiously insist on calling it by it’s original Ukrainian name) and Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas in a style that has you contemplating the deeper meaning of Santa and Satan being anagrams and weather Eggnog is murder.

The digital single surprised me by getting a fair bit of airplay on regional radio via AMRAP’s AirIt every year since its release. And now I’m attempting to give it the little push I never gave it back in 2015 because ... well you know, as Noddy said: “IT’S CHRIIIIIIIISSSSSMASSSS”!
