about

Brides Of Satan began sometime in 2016 when I responded to a Facebook post I saw calling for original music for a grind house indie horror movie. I contacted indie filmmaker Joe Bizarro and we bonded over horror movies and garage music and my involvement with Brides began - him in LA and me half a world away here in Melbourne.

I was sent a screenplay and a cast list (which at the time included Ron Jeremy and Kitten Natividad!) and I got to work writing a song that fit the tone of what I read in the script. I think I sent the first two songs before filming had even begun (this was a few years ago so I don’t remember specifics).

The process began slowly (because making a movie is hard and expensive with no financial or studio backing) and over the course of 5 or so years I’d be sent rough cuts of scenes with placeholder songs by other bands that fit the mood. I would then have the job of writing something that captured the essence of those well known copyrighted songs without ripping them off. This was a really fun challenge and very different to the way I usually write songs. Luckily I’m a huge fan of The Rutles (look it up!) so I understood a little bit about getting the “vibe” of a song without just stealing bits from it or making a soulless royalty-free soundalike. This process had me writing in genres I usually wouldn’t do: Desert blues (“Rise Of The Brides”), stoner (“Will We Survive Tonight”), sleazy stripper jazz (“Bumping Uglies & Grinding Meat”), Partridge Family style cornball ’60s TV theme cheese (“Shut Up & Be Happy”) and the most enjoyable and out of my comfort zone - an ‘80s rock training montage anthem (“Learning To Live To Death”)!

Eventually the movie was complete and I found myself with a bunch of interesting music to turn into an album. My recording setup and skills as a producer and performer had changed a fair bit over the course of making the movie but the mix of low-fi garage and more polished songs makes for interesting listening.

I’m very proud of this album and honoured to have been involved with Brides Of Satan which is now available on BluRay through Darkside Releasing and will be streaming later in the year.
